Did you know?

It’s often to see or hear of a laptop that won’t power on; sometimes the lights are on, but nothing displays on the screen.

The first thing to always try is to disconnect the laptop from the mains power and turn the laptop over. See if you can pop out the laptop battery, and with the battery still disconnected, plug the mains power back in and then see if it powers on.

If it does power on, either it didn’t shut down or the battery is faulty. You can pop the battery back in and see if it still powers up. If it doesn’t, the first port of call is to find a replacement battery for $50 or less on eBay for that specific model laptop and pop that in. While waiting for your replacement battery you can obviously use it plugged into mains.

If it doesn’t power up with the battery out, while plugged into mains, it is likely that it is an issue with your power connection or something more sinister with internal circuitry.

It’s then a good idea to consider whether the laptop is economical to repair, if it’s more than 3 to 4 years old, it’s unlikely that it’s worth repairing, unfortunately.

Most often your data is still able to be recovered from the laptop that isn’t powering up and can be transferred to your new machine.
